Marianna Canu is an Italian painter, jewelry designer and writer. She was born on the island of Sardinia, Italy into a family of painters, metal smiths and architects. She grew up living and breathing art. At the age of 5, she started handcrafting jewelry and experimenting with colors and paintings. Roman architecture and geometric forms inspired her, resulting in some of the most stunning and unique jewelry designs and patterns.
In 1990 she began her career as a jewelry designer, but she never abandoned her true passion…painting. Her designs provoked the attention and enthusiasm of a very involved audience and soon she found herself designing and producing jewelry for several upscale Boutiques and jewelry stores in the elite tourist resorts of Sardinia. “Designing jewelry is an art form, it is a perfect marriage of emotional expression and craftmanship”.
Marianna’s experience extends beyond the canvas and jewelry. She has worked on TV as a show host for a Sardinian channel and she has also been in several commercials and even held a minor role in the American movie “Baretta’s Island”.
Read MoreI express myself through my art. I let my mind guide me while I keep moving from one painting to the next. Art allows me to see the things that I can not see. Art is my oxygen.
Bubble Land is part of an imaginary world I used to escape to as a child. I would imagine I would walk into this limitless garden where only beautiful trees that were perfectly round and bubbly existed. Even the bushes, raindrops, and snowflakes were bubbly and I would see myself walking through this bubble land with an umbrella to protect myself from all these bubbles pouring from the trees. I always loved bubbles, and I try to incorporate them in my paintings. They were a sign of happiness for me. For the trunks of the trees, I always imagined them as straight and geometrical, which I guess is the rational side of my personality and the bubbles represent my more optimistic side.
-WeIcome to the world of Rebus. In this new series of paintings, I will be giving you a message. Each single painting has a specific meaning. Perhaps what you see is not really what you see. Rebus will never show her face but she will always have something to say. After all, even her name has a story. Look at the paintings carefully. Do you see what I see?
I have always been fascinated with skylines. Who isn't really. All those beautiful lights at night, so many of them. When I lived in New York I would often go out at night just to admire the lights. Beautiful buildings and lights. I remember thinking, who's behind that light? That window, in that building? What are they doing right now, who are they? I love skylines because when I see one, I see life.
I love colors, when I paint all I see is colors. However, I love black and white just as much.I have made several commissioned pieces in black and white and loved every moment of it. I use both black and white to achieve the color shades that I use in my paintings.
Apparel to me is always about art. What we wear is a language, and just like art, is a reflection of our personality.
